According to media reports, a Portuguese talent is on Manchester United’s radar for the summer transfer window. Benfica star João Neves is one such player.

Neves is being considered to bolster the team’s midfield options, especially after the mediocre form of Sofyan Amrabat, who is expected to return to Fiorentina after the end of his loan spell at Old Trafford. Christian Eriksen’s continued absence has also meant that he has fallen out of favour with manager Erik ten Hag.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to make a record offer of over £100 for the services of the young Portuguese star.

If the deal is finalised, it will be the most expensive in Manchester United’s history. It would surpass the value of Paul Pogba’s transfer from Juventus in 2016.

João Neves was promoted to Benfica’s first team in January 2023. He went on to make 63 appearances for the club in all competitions. He has scored 3 goals and provided 3 assists.

The Portuguese star is 19 years old and can play as a defensive midfielder. He has a contract that runs until June 2028. He has been compared to Italy’s Marco Verratti due to his movement on the pitch and his reading of the game.
