Michael Olise opened the scoring in the 12th minute for the home side, Jean-Philippe Mateta doubled the score in the 40th minute and Manchester United continued their poor form in the second half, conceding a third goal from Tyrick Mitchell and then a fourth from Michael Olise.

“It’s clear, it’s obvious, this is underperforming,” Ten Hag admitted to Sky Sports. “We didn’t act how we wanted to and it’s not good enough. We are very disappointed.

“Our fans were behind us and we should have kept fighting like the fans did.”

“There are always reasons, everyone sees our backline – we have huge problems. At the end of the day, we have to deal with it and we should have done better.”

The defeat was Manchester United’s thirteenth in the Premier League this season, the most defeats in a single season, but the Dutch manager emphasised that he will continue to work to get back on track.

“I will keep fighting,” the Dutchman said. “I prepared the team in the best way I could do. It was not good enough, I have to take responsibility for that but I will find energy and prepare them for Sunday’s game.”
