Manchester United are looking to sign Merino

Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign Mikel Merino in the summer transfer window.

Mikel Merino is regarded as one of the best midfielders in La Liga. Merino was named in the La Liga squad for the 2022/2023 season. Where he provided nine assists as Real Sociedad finished fourth in La Liga and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. He took the team to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League before they were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain. Mikel Merino has also made 19 appearances for the Spanish national team since making his debut in 2020.

According to Spanish publication COPE, Manchester United are monitoring the Spanish player and will be looking to sign him. With Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay all rumoured to be on the verge of leaving in the summer and Sofyan Amrabat’s loan spell at Old Trafford coming to an end, the club are preparing to overhaul their midfield.

The Sun also reports that the Red Devils will attempt to bring the former Newcastle star back to the Premier League. The Spain international had a short spell at Newcastle during the 2017/18 season after joining on loan from Borussia Dortmund. The 27-year-old made 25 appearances in the Premier League, scoring one goal.

Real Sociedad have failed to renew his contract, which expires in 2025. The club could sell the player for less than the €60 million penalty clause.

Manchester City, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are also interested in the player.
